The Kerguelen farm
JOSEPH, Organic Farmer in Kerguelen, Saint Pol de Léon
More than a job, a calling.
My grandparents bought the farm in 1920 near the coast between Saint Pol de Léon and Roscoff in Finistère, Brittany, so it benefits from the mild climate favorable to the cultivation of early vegetables.
For decades, the use of seaweed, a practice long employed in Kerguelen, has promoted soil fertility.
I grew up here, and so did my vocation. I settled here as a farmer in 1986.
The headquarters of my farm is in the center of 13 hectares on which I grow Camus artichokes, cauliflowers, broccoli, curly kale (or fringed kale), Tuscan black onions and pink onions.
The farm
There are 2 permanent meadows where a horse maintains the space, which promotes biodiversity.
I have always preserved the embankments on my agricultural land which also serve to house beneficial insects.
My commitments
My commitments to agriculture are numerous: I have completely excluded chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, as well as GMOs .
I am in certified organic farming (AB - Agriculture Biologique), and all the vegetables on the farm are organic.
Beyond that, I am a member of the producers' organization APFLBB, that is to say Association of organic fruit and vegetable producers of Brittany.
Our products are sold under the BIOBREIZH brand, which adheres to even stricter and more demanding specifications (planting hedgerows, no manure from intensive livestock farming on the fields, etc.). We are members of Bienvenue à la ferme (Welcome to the Farm).
